Chat is not the finished product

An agent can write a perfect analysis and still leave work behind. Somebody copies it into a document, fixes the headings, moves numbers into a spreadsheet, and files the result where the team expects it. The AI was busy; the work was not finished.

That happens because we confuse the answer with the outcome. An answer explains. An outcome can be sent, reviewed, filed, signed, or edited. In a working day, that distinction matters more than another improvement in wording.

If the user spends twenty minutes formatting after the answer, it was not automation. It was raw material.

02

An artifact carries responsibility

A document forces decisions that chat happily leaves open. What is the title? Which version is this? Which assumptions belong inside? What is approved and what remains a draft? That is why business files are more than containers for text.

An agent creating an artifact has to respect those expectations. Not by magically guessing every house style, but by making it clear what was created and how finished it is.

Not every task wants the same format

A management brief needs compression. A calculation needs numbers that can be checked. A customer proposal needs form; a presentation needs rhythm. Producing everything as Markdown gives you one output format, not document capability.

The right form is not cosmetic cleanup. It determines whether a result can be understood, controlled, and used. Good agents therefore do more than choose words. They respect the shape of the work.

  • The result fits the next human action
  • Draft and approved version remain distinguishable
  • Numbers and assumptions can be checked
  • Every task ends as a copy-ready chat block

Concrete: not another paragraph for Finance

A finance team asks about this month's variance. The weak answer is a friendly summary with three bullets. The useful answer is a traceable table, a short note on outliers, and a report somebody can review before it moves on.

The agent does not replace approval. It removes the mechanical journey to that point. That is less spectacular than an autonomous CFO and much closer to real value.

Done is a product language

Agents grow up when they do not merely say something clever, but leave work in a form people can take over. Sometimes that is a short answer. Sometimes a clean draft. Sometimes a file.

The most important output of an agent is not text. It is less leftover work for the human afterwards.
