Deterministic is not a dirty word.

A model can understand intent, choose between tools, and respond to an unexpected situation. That is why agents are interesting. It is not a reason to turn every known action back into an interpretation problem.

If a process says check this status and then call exactly this approved action, nobody wins because the agent found a more original idea on the way. Freedom is valuable only where decision room actually exists.

Not every step needs intelligence. Some simply need reliability.

Open work says: understand the request, gather information, form a judgment. Deterministic work says: take these checked values and perform this known step. Good agent systems can connect both without blurring the boundary.

The agent is strong in ambiguity. The fixed step is strong in repeatability. Trouble starts when one is sold as a substitute for the other.

Models can now read and operate interfaces that were never built for agents. That opens valuable paths through legacy systems. It does not make a click a good process.

The closer an agent moves to real operation, the more important allowed areas, unambiguous goals, and a visible stop before critical changes become. A model that can click needs less product design. It needs more.

A support agent may understand a complicated case, read policy, and form a recommendation. Once the refund is approved, the booking should not become a second guessing game. Amount, recipient, and reason are known; the step should do exactly what was shown.

That is not mistrust of the model. It is respect for the difference between thinking and booking.

The best production systems deliberately alternate between flexible intelligence and boring, verifiable steps. From the outside that does not feel like architecture. It simply feels reliable.

An agent may surprise you when it finds a better idea. It must not surprise you when it pays an invoice.
